This immersive 3D-printed lift installation at The Roof Gardens in London transforms the journey to the rooftop into an ascent through glowing Mammatus clouds. Inspired by “Head in the clouds, feet on the dance floor,” the tactile cladding is integrated with the lift’s buttons and mirrors, while programmable LED backlighting adapts to different events.
Each seamless surface, approximately 2 × 2 metres, was parametrically designed and robotically printed in London using a custom translucent, fire-retardant PLA bioplastic. Made from fermented sugar, the panels can be crushed and reprinted or industrially composted. The entire project—from concept to installation—was completed in four weeks.
